Backpack Safety Tips
  • Choose the correct size backpack - it should not be winder or longer than your child's torso
  • Make sure it has two wide padded shoulder straps - they should rest equally on each shoulder
  • Look for a padded waist or chest belt - to distribute the weight more evenly across the body
  • It should have multiple compartments - to distribute the weight of the load
  • The backpack itself should be lightweight
  • Load heavier items close to the body
  • Help reduce weight by buying books on CD-ROM or paperbacks when possible
  • Place things with sharp points that could poke through the pack's material in containers
  • Don't overload the backpack
  • Clean the backpack out at the end of everyday and remove unnecessary items
  • Make sure the loaded weight is no more than 15% of the child's body weight
  • Lift the backpack correctly by bending the knees, using both hands and lifting with the legs
  • Put the pack on correcctly by applying one shoulder strap and then the other
  • Tighten straps until the pack is close to the body- it shouldn't hang more than 4" below the waist
  • Keep the waist or chest strap buckled
  • Readjust the straps on the backpack every time it is used to make sure it fits properly
  • Never carry backpack using only one strap or slung over one shoulder
